Step beyond meticulous rendering and discover the power of expressive portrait drawing through the immediacy of charcoal. In this immersive three-day workshop, internationally recognized artist Zin Lim will guide you through a progressive exploration of portraiture — from classical structure to impressionistic interpretation and ultimately to bold expressionism.

Designed for artists of all levels, this workshop emphasizes movement, emotion, and visual impact while strengthening the foundational principles that support great drawing. Through demonstration, guided instruction, and focused studio work, students will learn to loosen their mark-making, trust their instincts, and develop portraits that communicate presence rather than mere likeness.

You will complete one portrait each day, each rooted in a distinct stylistic approach.
About the Instructor — Zin Lim

Zin Lim is an internationally acclaimed Korean artist and educator celebrated for his distinctive fusion of realism, impressionism, and expressionism. After more than a decade teaching at the Academy of Art University Graduate School in San Francisco, he has helped countless artists uncover stronger, more personal visual languages.

Lim has led over 100 workshops and masterclasses across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. His teaching is known for its energy and improvisational spirit — encouraging artists to move beyond rigid technical habits and toward work that is both structurally sound and emotionally resonant.

A recipient of multiple international awards, Lim is represented by galleries throughout the United States and has exhibited in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. He holds an MFA from the Academy of Art University and a BFA in Industrial Design from Hongik University in Seoul.

Workshop Structure

Day One — Classical Foundations
Build a strong structural framework using traditional charcoal techniques while introducing expressive mark-making. Focus will be placed on proportion, gesture, and achieving dimensional form.

Day Two — Impressionistic Interpretation
Shift toward atmosphere and perception by exploring light, shadow, and tonal relationships. Students will learn how varied charcoal handling can suggest texture, depth, and subtle transitions without over-rendering.

Day Three — Expressive Portraiture
Push beyond restraint and embrace bold gestures, dynamic contrasts, and emotional intensity. This session encourages risk-taking while reinforcing the design principles that keep expressive work visually compelling.
