Alex Rubio is the Artist-in-Residence for Blue Star Contemporary’s MOSAIC Student Artist Program, where he mentors area high school youth in studio art techniques, public art commissions and early exhibition experience in Blue Star’s MOSAIC Gallery. Rubio is also adjunct instructor for the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts.
As an arts organizer, Rubio has instructed and coordinated community-based public art programming with the Community Cultural Arts Organization, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, San Anto Cultural Arts Organization and now, Blue Star Contemporary MOSAIC.
Rubio’s artwork has been exhibited locally at the San Antonio Museum of Art, the McNay Art Museum and Blue Star Contemporary. His work is also featured in national touring exhibitions, including those of the private collections of Cheech Marin and Joe A. Diaz.
Rubio has received national recognition with grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship. In 2007, he was curated into the Artpace International Artist-in-Residency Program and also received an Artpace, London Travel Grant.
In March 2011, Rubio founded and curates ®space, which presents the debut exhibitions of undiscovered and developing local artists.
In July 2016, he founded and curates, Rubio Gallery-South, presenting work by emerging and early career artists.
